How to Know The Voice of God

You know you are hearing the voice of God when you hear these things:

•   He gives instruction in righteousness, (2 Tim. 3:16)


•   He gives correction in righteousness, (2 Tim. 3:16; Prov. 3:11-12)


•   He causes you to profit in Christ, (2 Tim. 3:16; Jn. 15:16)


•   He causes us to believe in Him (Jn. 4:41)

•   He brings to your remembrance the Word of God, (Jn. 14:26)


•   He guides you into Truth, (Jn. 16:13; 18:37)


•   He exhorts you, (Jude 3; Rom. 12:1)


•   He comforts you, (Jn. 14:16; Ps. 23:4)


•   He rebukes and reproves you, (Titus 1:13; 2 Tim. 4:2) 


•   He brings conviction & calls for change in our lives (Mk. 10:22; Rom 6:1-23; 1Thess. 2:13)

•   He leads you to salvation/eternal life, (Jn. 5:24; 8:51; Rom. 10:9-10; 1Pet. 1:23; 2 Tim. 3:15)


•   He assures you of the Father's love and approval, (Matt. 3:17; 1 Jn. 3:1; Jer. 31:3; 2Pet. 1:17)


•   He admonishes and warns you, (Eph. 6:4; Acts 21:4,10-14)


•   He edifies you, (Eph. 4:12)


•   He increases your faith, (Rom. 10:17)


•   He causes you to triumph in life through Christ, (2 Cor. 2:14)

•   He fills us with good fruit (Matt. 13:23; Lu. 8:15)

•   He accompanies His word with signs and miracles (Mk. 16:20; Lu. 5:5; 7:7; Acts 14:3)

•   He births the supernatural inside us (Lu. 1:38)

•   He gives us authority over Satan, demons and all people (Lu. 4:4, 32, 36)

•   He calls us His brothers/family/disciples (Lu. 8:21; Jn. 8:31)

•   He reveals everything in our hearts and lives through His words (Jn. 4:39)

•   He heals us with His voice (Jn. 4:41)

•   He speaks even to the dead and they can live (Jn. 5:25, 28; 11:43)

•   He has a voice that we can know and follow; He calls us by name (Jn. 10:3-5, 14-16, 27-30)

•   He tells us that He dwells/abides in us (Jn. 14:23)

•   He brings to our remembrance the Word of God, (Jn. 14:26; Acts 11:15)

•   He teaches us (Jn. 14:16)


•   He cleanses us (Jn. 15:3)

•   He causes us to be successful in prayer, (Jn. 15:16)


•   He sanctifies us (Jn. 17:17)

•   He calls us to bless the nations (Acts 8:14)

•   He asks questions (Acts 9:4; 22:7; 26:14)

•   He gives detailed direction (Acts 10:13-15)

•   He speaks promises to us that come to pass (Rom. 9:9)

•   He inspires and increases our faith, (Rom. 10:17)


•   He speaks supernatural wisdom and knowledge (1Cor. 12:8)

•   He gives us power in battle with His word (Eph. 6:17)

•   He comes with power in His word and voice (1Thess. 1:5)

•   He sounds His voice in us until it resounds out from us to all people (1Thess. 1:8)

•   He speaks a living, powerful word-pierces every thought & intent of our hearts (Heb. 4:12)

•   He created all things with the words of His voice (Heb. 11:3)

•   He has a voice like a trumpet – awesome and overwhelming (Heb. 12:19)

•   He shakes heaven and earth with His voice (Heb. 12:26)

•   He perfects His love in us and assures us that we live in Him (1Jn. 2:5)

•   He assures you of the Father's love toward you, (1 Jn. 3:1; Jer. 31:3)


•   He knocks on our hearts with His voice and comes in to commune with us (Rev. 3:20)

Here is the next installment of those different ways where we hear God's voice:

  -  Prophecy—Heb. 1:1; 2 Sam. 23:2; 2 Kings 21:10; Lu. 1:70;

     A prophecy occurs when God speaks a message through one or more person(s) for the benefit of another. If God directs you to deliver a prophecy to someone else, be faithful to do so. But be careful! Be sure to thoroughly test any prophecy against biblical truth, and check to make sure the timing is also correct. Never add anything of your own to a prophecy. Remember that if a prophecy is indeed from God, He will confirm it in other ways and bring it to pass.

-   Seers—1 Chron. 21:9; 25:5

     Seers are those who see prophetic things.

-   Prophetic songs—1 Chron. 25:1–7; Eph. 5:19; Col 3:16; 1 Cor. 14:15

     Our God is a singing God (Zeph. 3:17). It can be so powerful to hear His voice through a song. God’s primary role for singers is that they should be singers of His words. The first prophetic song in the Word is in Exodus 15 (Moses’ song after Israel crossed the Red Sea), and the Bible is full of prophetic songs that bring deliverance, comfort, direction, and hope.

-   The gifts of the Holy Spirit—1 Cor. 12–14

     All nine of the gifts of the Holy Spirit can be used to convey God’s heart and mind to us – especially, prophecy, discernment, words of knowledge, words of wisdom, tongues, interpretation, and faith. Each of these are a supernatural gifts that equip us to think, speak and act like our Father, and to partner with Him every day as ministers of His glory. For example, when we pray in a spiritual language under the Holy Spirit’s direction, we can go beyond the limits of your human intellect and own language to communicate deep messages that glorify God and bless other people. Paul talked about “praying with the spirit, and also with the understanding” (1 Cor. 14:15). We can open our spirit to the Spirit and voice of God by praying in tongues. Our spirit is activated first, and our mind follows. We are used to leading with our minds, but the Lord may draw our spirit first and speak there before our mind can diminish or rationalize what God is saying. When we speak in tongues we are speaking mysteries (1 Cor. 14:2) – we are participating in our Father’s business.

-   The leading of the Holy Spirit—Is. 30:21; Rom. 8:14

For as many as are led by the Spirit of God, these are sons of God. God is able to speak, lead and direct us when we live as sons.

-   The conviction of the Holy Spirit—Jn. 16:8

Recognize the difference between conviction and condemnation – God convicts you to help you find His forgiveness, grace, and mercy, while Satan condemns you to bring you into bondage to shame and false guilt. Be quick to repent when God convicts you.

-   Preaching, parables and stories—Mark 2:2; 4:33; 1 Thess. 2:13

    One of the greatest ways that Jesus got His words across was through preaching, teaching and telling stories. His sermons are some of the wisest and most beautiful words ever uttered. Today, anointed preaching and speaking is still an excellent way to be tuned into God’s voice.

-   The Body of Christ—Pr. 15:22; 24:6; 27:17

He can use anyone to speak to us, but He mostly uses other Believers. Be open to hearing God speak through any part of His Body from any nation or Church. Before taking people’s advice, however, make sure they’re mature believers whom you trust, and that you’ve thought and prayed about the advice yourself.

-  The local church: God may often speak to you through your spiritual leaders and fellow believers at your local church. Pay close attention to what they say and seriously consider it. Do your part to support and encourage them, as well.

-  Circumstances—sometimes our circumstances lead us to and through the thing that God is trying to say to us.

Here are the results of hearing and obeying God's voice from Deuteronomy 28:1-14:

1    If you will listen diligently to the voice of the Lord your God, being watchful to do all His commandments which I command you this day, the Lord your God will set you high above all the nations of the earth.

2    And all these blessings shall come upon you and overtake you if you heed the voice of the Lord your God.

3    Blessed shall you be in the city and blessed shall you be in the field.

4    Blessed shall be the fruit of your body and the fruit of your ground and the fruit of your beasts, the increase of your cattle and the young of your flock.

5    Blessed shall be your basket and your kneading trough.

6    Blessed shall you be when you come in and blessed shall you be when you go out.

7    The Lord shall cause your enemies who rise up against you to be defeated before your face; they shall come out against you one way and flee before you seven ways.

8    The Lord shall command the blessing upon you in your storehouse and in all that you undertake. And He will bless you in the land which the Lord your God gives you.

9    The Lord will establish you as a people holy to Himself, as He has sworn to you, if you keep the commandments of the Lord your God and walk in His ways.

11   And the Lord shall make you have a surplus of prosperity, through the fruit of your body, of your livestock, and of your ground, in the land which the Lord swore to your fathers to give you.

12   The Lord shall open to you His good treasury, the heavens, to give the rain of your land in its season and to bless all the work of your hands; and you shall lend to many nations, but you shall not borrow.

13   And the Lord shall make you the head, and not the tail; and you shall be above only, and you shall not be beneath, if you heed the commandments of the Lord your God which I command you this day and are watchful to do them.

14   And you shall not turn aside from any of the words which I command you this day, to the right hand or to the left, to go after other gods to serve them.

• v3 You will be blessed in city, business or agricultural work

• v4, 11 Your children will be blessed, and everything else you produce will prosper – even the offspring of your animals

• v5  Your food will be blessed

• v6 You will be blessed as you come into your home and as you go out

• v7 You will have God’s power over your enemies – they will flee faster than the way they came to attack you

• v8 God will command a blessing on everything you put your hand to – every aspect of your work and your home shall be prosperous. New avenues of prosperity and financial freedom will lead to an overflow of financial blessing

• v9-10 God will give you leadership and favor over all nations. You will be known as his holy people and you will command respect

• v12 You will have rain and not drought

• v12 You will lend to others and not have to borrow

• v13 You will be a forward thinking, visionary leader

God's Voice

Just like the Psalmist, we long for the Lord to hear our voice (Ps. 5:2; 130:2), but we need to understand that He longs even more for us to hear His voice (Rev. 3:20; John 10:27 My sheep hear My voice, and I know them, and they follow Me.)

God wants to talk to His people. When you read the Word, you can see that He is a very “talkative” God. He:

—    Creates with His voice (Gen. 1:3–26; Ps. 29:4–9; 33:6)

—    Spoke face to face with Moses (Ex. 33:11)

—    Speaks in fire (Deut. 4:12)

—    Thunders with His voice (Job 37:2, 4–5)

—    Shouts and cries out loudly (Ps. 47:5; Is. 42:13)

—    Has a voice like many waters (Ez. 1:24; 43:2)

—    Has a voice that sounds like the wings of the cherubim (Ez. 10:5)

—    Roars with His voice through His people (Joel 3:16; Amos 1:2)

—    Sings and rejoices over us (Zeph. 3:17)

—    Spoke audibly to Jesus and all who were with Him (Matt. 3:17; 17:5)

—    Spoke audibly to Saul of Tarsus (Acts 9:5, 7; 22:8)

—    Spoke audibly to Peter (Acts 10:15)

—    Spoke audibly to John (Rev. 1:10)

—    Shakes the earth with His voice (Heb. 12:26)

How To Hear God's Voice

Not only does the Lord speak audibly in both the Old and New Testaments, but He also speaks through:

- Worship—the songs and communion with the Lord in worship invariably opens us to His voice—1 Chron. 25:1–7; Eph. 5:19; Col. 3:16

- The Word—Ps. 119:130; Acts 8:30–35; Rom. 15:14; 2 Tim. 3:16

- Personal prayer and communion with God–2 Chron. 7:12–16; 2Cor. 13:14

- Dreams—Dan. 2:1; Matt. 1:20

-  Impression—the thought that is not your own. Inner voice—the voice that brings a peace. This is usually the work of the Holy Spirit—Acts 15:28. This might also be the still small voice of God that Elijah experienced 1Ki. 19:11-13

- Every day situations—the Lord can use any means around us to communicate His ideas such as movies, newspapers, people

- Natural world, God’s creation—Ps. 19:1; 97:6

- Pictures or visions—Is. 1:1; Jer. 1:2–4; Ez. 1:1; Am. 3:7; 1 Cor. 14:3; Heb. 1:1

- Prophecy—Heb. 1:1

-  The gifts of the Holy Spirit—1 Cor. 12–14

-  The leading of the Holy Spirit—Is. 30:21; Rom. 8:14

-  The conviction of the Holy Spirit—Jn. 16:8

-  Preaching, parables and stories—Mark 2:2; 4:33; 1 Thess. 2:13

- Through intimacy—Jn. 10:3, 14

- He speaks through the body—He can use anyone to speak to us, but He mostly uses other Believers—Pr. 15:22; 24:6; 27:17
