7 Things - Psalm 45

This psalm is a love song to the King – it was probably written on the occasion of the coronation of Solomon…but is also an allegorical description of our King of kings.

Verses 3-4 give a magnificent description of the glories of His majesty – 7 layers of beauty:

-       He is full of might

-       He is full of glory

-       He is full of majesty

-       He is full of prosperity

-       He is full of truth

-       He is full of humility

-       He is full of righteousness

V6-7 Not only that, but He is seated on an everlasting throne, and He rules with a scepter of righteousness. Scepters are emblems of royal authority, and the foundation of all authority in this Kingdom is holiness and joy!

Verses 6-7

Your throne, O God, is forever and ever;

A scepter of righteousness is the scepter of Your kingdom.

You love righteousness and hate wickedness;

Therefore God, Your God, has anointed You

With the oil of gladness more than Your companions.

V8 Take time today to smell the fragrance of His garments:

-       Myrrh – the smell of death when self has died and Christ lives

-       Aloes – the smell of extravagant, passionate worship

-       Cassia – the smell of the overcomer who strips off the old and sinful self, and lives in Christ

Gold, Frankincense and Myrrh

Matt. 2:11

And when they were come into the house,

they saw the young child with Mary his mother,

and fell down, and worshipped him:

and when they had opened their treasures,

they presented unto him gifts;

gold, and frankincense and myrrh.

Because he is our Emmanuel - the God who has come to be with us -

Bring Him Gold - this represents your character - victories that you have won with Christ in the core of who you are - He is in you...the hope of glory. Bring yourself to Him as an offering of gold this Christmas

Gold will cause you to look like Him

Bring Him Frankincense - this represents your worship - all of your heart poured out in devotion. Bring yourself to Him as an offering of frankincense this Christmas

Frankincense will cause you to sound like Him

Bring Him Myrrh - this represents your suffering...those things that have broken your heart this year...the fragrance of myrrh comes not just because we have suffered, but because we choose the Lord in the midst of suffering, and overcome despite our suffering. Bring yourself to Him as an offering of myrrh this Christmas

Myrrh will cause you to smell like Him

The Anointing 4

The anointing of oil—Ex. 30:23–30; Lev. 14:17

Moreover the Lord spoke to Moses saying, Also take for yourself quality spices - five hundred shekels of liquid myrrh, half as much sweet smelling cinnamon (two hundred and fifty shekels), two hundred and fifty of sweet smelling cane. Five hundred shekels of cassia, according to the shekel of sanctuary and a him of olive oil. And you shall make from these a holy anointing oil, an ointment compounded according to the art of the perfumer. It shall be a holy anointing oil. Exodus 30:22-25

The 2^nd anointing to be placed on the right ear, thumb and toe, is the anointing of oil. As you can see in the verse above, there are 5 ingredients that had to be blended together.

The holy anointing oil was used to anoint the priests as well as all furniture in the Tabernacle of the Congregation. Again, this anointing is an expression of the person of the Spirit of God – it is a picture of the presence of the Holy Spirit in every area of our lives.

There was a strict recipe for the anointing oil. Each of these ingredients has meaning for our lives:

5 ingredients indicate God’s GRACE – FAVOR

It is as if the first four ingredients are “baptized” in the water of the Holy Spirit

• 500 shekels (1 shekel=10 penny weights) of liquid myrrh—

500 Israeli shekels = approx. $130 U.S. dollars

Myrrh has a bad taste, but a sweet smell. It represents the suffering and sacrificial death of Christ. Myrrh was offered to Jesus 3 times during His life—at His birth; when He was dying (to dull the pain of the cross); He was embalmed in myrrh. Each of these point to the importance of Christ’s suffering and death on our behalf. We can also see the 3 uses for myrrh in Biblical times:

            —As a cleansing agent

            —As an ingredient in the anointing oil

            —As a perfume

When we learn the secrets of dying to self and walking through suffering with grace; then we will come into a great place of cleansing in our lives, a new anointing will rest upon us and our lives will have the fragrance of Christ.

How Do We Find Myrrh In Our Lives?

Phil. 3:10—seek the fellowship of His suffering
