Song Of Deliverance 3

David's Music Ministry to King Saul—I Sam. 16:14-23

Although this ministry is not technically a "song" it is still regarded as one of the best examples we have in scripture of the song of deliverance. By the permission of God, Saul was troubled by an evil spirit. David was chosen to appear at the royal court and skillfully play the harp. Through the music, Saul was freed from the evil bondage. This is a remarkable example of the effect of music upon the soul and spirit of man. It implies that David was very skilled on the harp (kinnör). Josephus described this as an instrument of ten strings (Ant. B. 7. Chapter 12).

Music has a natural tendency to compose and exhilarate the mind, when it is disturbed and saddened. On some it has a greater influence and effect than on others, and, probably, Saul was one of those. It made his spirit sedate, and allayed those tumults by which the devil had advantage against him. Music cannot work upon the devil, but it may shut up the passages by which he had access to the mind. Saul found, even after he had conceived an enmity to David, that no one else could do him the same service. (Matthew Henry, The Bethany Parallel Commentary on the Old Testament., p. 541.)

When musical sound is directed and anointed by the Holy Spirit, it is effective in the pulling down of strongholds.

The music itself is not the thing that heals - it is the anointing of God on the music that heals. Music is the vehicle that carries the anointing. Surrender your gift to the Lord and allow Him to flow through you with the sound of deliverance.
