The Power Of The Tongue

Our tongues have such a powerful influence over our whole lives. For such a little organ, we seem to spend so little time considering what the Bible says about it.

Pr. 21:23

Whoever guards his mouth and tongue

Keeps his soul from troubles.

Ps. 141:3

Set a guard, O LORD, over my mouth;

Keep watch over the door of my lips.

Here are all the Scriptures on the tongue and our mouths from the books of Psalms and Proverbs - I have put them into two lists - the wicked tongue and the righteous tongue. Maybe these verses will help us to turn more and more to righteousness in the way we speak.

The wicked tongue:

Ps 10:7 …is full of cursing and deceit and oppression…trouble and iniquity.

Ps 12:3 …flattering lips, And the tongue that speaks proud things,

Ps 36:3 The words of his mouth are wickedness and deceit…

Ps 50:19 You give your mouth to evil, And your tongue frames deceit.

Ps 50:20 You sit and speak against your brother; You slander your own mother’s son.

Ps 57:4 …whose teeth are spears and arrows, And their tongue a sharp sword.

Ps 62:4 …They delight in lies; They bless with their mouth, But they curse inwardly.

Ps 64:3 …sharpen their tongue like a sword…bend their bows to shoot their arrows--bitter words,

Ps 109:2 …They have spoken against me with a lying tongue.

Ps 140:3 They sharpen their tongues like a serpent; The poison of asps is under their lips.

Pr 5:3 For the lips of an immoral woman drip honey, And her mouth is smoother than oil;

Pr 6:2 You are snared by the words of your mouth; You are taken by the words of your mouth.

Pr 6:12 A worthless person, a wicked man, Walks with a perverse mouth; (Pr 10:32)

Pr 6:16–19 …seven things the Lord hates: …A lying tongue…A false witness who speaks lies, and one who sows discord among brethren.

Pr 6:24 …the flattering tongue of a seductress.

Pr 8:13 …Pride and arrogance and the evil way And the perverse mouth I hate.

Pr 10:6,11 …violence covers the mouth of the wicked.

Pr 10:14 …the mouth of the foolish is near destruction.

Pr 10:18 Whoever hides hatred has lying lips…whoever spreads slander is a fool.

Pr 11:9 The hypocrite with his mouth destroys his neighbor…

Pr 11:11 …the city…is overthrown by the mouth of the wicked.

Pr 12:6 The words of the wicked are, “Lie in wait for blood,”…

Pr 12:18 There is one who speaks like the piercings of a sword…

Pr 13:3 …he who opens wide his lips shall have destruction.

Pr 14:3 In the mouth of a fool is a rod of pride…

Pr 15:2 …the mouth of fools pours forth foolishness. (Pr. 15:14)

Pr 15:4 A tongue (with) perverseness in it breaks the spirit.

Pr 15:28 …the mouth of the wicked pours forth evil.

Pr 17:4 An evildoer gives heed to false lips; A liar listens eagerly to a spiteful tongue.

Pr 17:20 …he who has a perverse tongue falls into evil.

Pr 18:6 A fool’s lips enter into contention, And his mouth calls for blows.

Pr 18:7 A fool’s mouth is his destruction, And his lips are the snare of his soul.

Pr 19:28 A disreputable witness scorns justice, And the mouth of the wicked devours iniquity.

Pr 20:17 Bread gained by deceit is sweet to a man…afterward his mouth will be filled with gravel.

Pr 21:6 Getting treasures by a lying tongue Is the fleeting fantasy of those who seek death.

Pr 22:14 The mouth of an immoral woman is a deep pit; He who is abhorred by the LORD will fall there.

Pr 24:7 Wisdom is too lofty for a fool; He does not open his mouth in the gate.

Pr 25:23 The north wind brings forth rain, And a backbiting tongue an angry countenance.

Pr 26:28 A lying tongue hates those who are crushed by it, And a flattering mouth works ruin.

Ps 19:14 Let the words of my mouth…be acceptable in Your sight,

Ps 34:1 His praise shall continually be in my mouth.

Ps 34:13 Keep your tongue from evil, And your lips from speaking deceit.

Ps 35:28 And my tongue shall speak of Your righteousness And of Your praise all the day long. (Pss. 71:8, 15, 24; 145:21)

Ps 37:30 The mouth of the righteous speaks wisdom, And his tongue talks of justice.

Ps 39:1 I will guard my ways, Lest I sin with my tongue; I will restrain my mouth with a muzzle, While the wicked are before me.

Ps 49:3 My mouth shall speak wisdom,

Ps 51:14 …And my tongue shall sing aloud of Your righteousness.

Ps 51:15 O Lord, open my lips, And my mouth shall show forth Your praise.

Ps 63:5 … my mouth shall praise You with joyful lips.

Ps 81:10 …Open your mouth wide, and I will fill it.

Ps 89:1 With my mouth will I make known Your faithfulness to all generations.

Ps 109:30 I will greatly praise the LORD with my mouth…among the multitude.

Ps 119:172 My tongue shall speak of Your word…

Ps 126:2 Then our mouth was filled with laughter, And our tongue with singing.

Ps 149:6 Let the high praises of God be in their mouth…

Pr 4:24 Put away from you a deceitful mouth, And put perverse lips far from you.

Pr 8:7 For my mouth will speak truth; Wickedness is an abomination to my lips.

Pr 8:8 All the words of my mouth are with righteousness; Nothing crooked or perverse is in them.

Pr 10:11 The mouth of the righteous is a well of life…

Pr 10:20 The tongue of the righteous is choice silver…

Pr 10:31 The mouth of the righteous brings forth wisdom

Pr 10:32 The lips of the righteous know what is acceptable…

Pr 12:6 …the mouth of the upright will deliver them.

Pr 12:14 A man will be satisfied with good by the fruit of his mouth…(Pr. 13:2)

Pr 12:18 …the tongue of the wise promotes health.

Pr 12:19 The truthful lip shall be established forever…

Pr 13:3 He who guards his mouth preserves his life…

Pr 14:3 …the lips of the wise will preserve them.

Pr 15:2 The tongue of the wise uses knowledge rightly…

Pr 15:4 A wholesome tongue is a tree of life…

Pr 15:23 A man has joy by the answer of his mouth, And a word spoken in due season, how good it is!

Pr 15:28 The heart of the righteous studies how to answer…

Pr 18:4 The words of a man’s mouth are deep waters; The wellspring of wisdom is a flowing brook.

Pr 18:20 A man’s stomach shall be satisfied from the fruit of his mouth, From the produce of his lips he shall be filled.

Pr 18:21 Death and life are in the power of the tongue, And those who love it will eat its fruit.

Pr 21:23 Whoever guards his mouth and tongue Keeps his soul from troubles.

Pr 25:15 By long forbearance a ruler is persuaded, And a gentle tongue breaks a bone.

Pr 31:26 She opens her mouth with wisdom, And on her tongue is the law of kindness.
