7 Things - Our Journey From Faith To Love

Peter describes a seven-step journey of faith
2 Pet. 1:2–8

(I have included the NLT version of this passage as it reads so well, and aids in the meaning)

2 Peter 1:2-8 (NKJV)

2 Grace and peace be multiplied to you in the knowledge of God and of Jesus our Lord,
3 as His divine power has given to us all things that pertain to life and godliness, through the knowledge of Him who called us by glory and virtue,
4 by which have been given to us exceedingly great and precious promises, that through these you may be partakers of the divine nature, having escaped the corruption that is in the world through lust.
5 But also for this very reason, giving all diligence, add to your faith virtue, to virtue knowledge,
6 to knowledge self-control, to self-control perseverance, to perseverance godliness,
7 to godliness brotherly kindness, and to brotherly kindness love.
8 For if these things are yours and abound, you will be neither barren nor unfruitful in the knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ.

We can see in verses 3 and 4 that this seven-step journey takes us from faith to love—through His power and promises, and our participation (partake) in His divine nature. Look at the attributes we have to add to our faith in order to gain more and more of the likeness of Christ:

Add to your faith—virtue (moral excellence, goodness, Christian energy)
Add to virtue—knowledge (intelligence)
Add to knowledge—self-control (discipline)
Add to self-control—perseverance (patience, endurance)
Add to perseverance—godliness (piety)
Add to godliness—brotherly kindness
Add to brotherly kindness—love

It is interesting to me that the journey begins with faith and concludes with love. What perfect "bookends" for our journey!

The concept of “adding” to our faith means that we have work to do. We cannot work for our salvation - Jesus has done that - there is nothing we can do to add to what He accomplished for us on Calvary. However we do have work to do in order to grow in grace. God does not force these attributes onto us, nor does he hand them to us as a free gift. Each of these attributes has to be worked into our lives through a series of choices, self-discipline, and faith victories. God doesn’t do this work – we must do it.

I think we will grow stronger in faith if we have to walk into these things day by day - disciplining our hearts and minds to follow Christ and let go of self.

We must become passionate about gaining the likeness of Christ – this is really what it means to be a “Christian.” I invite you to embark on this journey to “build and perfect your faith” – take a day out of the week to focus on each one of these steps and ask the Lord to reveal His plan for you to grow in this grace.

2 Peter 1:2-8 (New Living Translation)

2 May God bless you with his special favor and wonderful peace as you come to know Jesus, our God and Lord, better and better.
3 As we know Jesus better, his divine power gives us everything we need for living a godly life. He has called us to receive his own glory and goodness!
4 And by that same mighty power, he has given us all of his rich and wonderful promises. He has promised that you will escape the decadence all around you caused by evil desires and that you will share in his divine nature.
5 So make every effort to apply the benefits of these promises to your life. Then your faith will produce a life of moral excellence. A life of moral excellence leads to knowing God better.
6 Knowing God leads to self-control. Self-control leads to patient endurance, and patient endurance leads to godliness.
7 Godliness leads to love for other Christians, and finally you will grow to have genuine love for everyone.
8 The more you grow like this, the more you will become productive and useful in your knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ.

Nine Fruit of the Holy Spirit

Nine Fruit of the Holy Spirit—Gal. 5:22; John 15:5–8

But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control. Against such there is no law.

Notice that the fruit of the Spirit are mentioned as a single fruit. All of these fruits must flow in us as if they were one fruit - we don't pick and choose out of the 9 - we need them all.

D.L. Moody believed that all the fruit are an expression of the first fruit in the list - LOVE. He described the fruit of the Spirit this way:

Love
Joy is love exulting;
Peace is love reposing;
Patience is love untiring;
kindness is love enduring;
Goodness is love displaying (in action);
faith is love advancing  (on the battlefield;)
Gentleness is love abiding (under discipline;)
self-control is love in training.

This is the Holy Spirit’s fruit – He is the One who produces this fruit in us. 7 Principles of fruit:

- Fruit grows – it cannot be made, and takes time to work in our lives
- Fruit reproduces itself
- Fruit nourishes others outside itself
- Fruit must be connected to a life-source (the Vine), it cannot grow alone
- Fruit is dependant on the tree. Good fruit can only come from a good tree
- Fruit can only grow as a result death (Jn. 12:24)
- Fruit multiplies enormously from the original seed (Matt. 17:20) Anyone can count the seeds in an apple - only God can count the apples in a seed. (Robert Schuller)

Notice the “works of the flesh in Gal. 5:19-21 Now the works of the flesh are evident, which are: adultery, fornication, uncleanness, lewdness, idolatry, sorcery, hatred, contentions, jealousies, outbursts of wrath, selfish ambitions, dissensions, heresies, envy, murders, drunkenness, revelries, and the like; of which I tell you beforehand, just as I also told you in time past, that those who practice such things will not inherit the kingdom of God.

These works of the flesh (18?) are contrasted by the 9 fruit of the Spirit in the next verse. The 9 fruit of the Spirit are able to overcome the 18 works of the flesh – that is because the fruit comes directly from the Holy Spirit – they are an expression of God in us – God touching us at the core of our humanity.

The fruit of the Spirit are not placed in us by the Holy Spirit (as the gifts of the Spirit are) – they are a result of our walk with the Holy Spirit into a Christ-like life. This is the character of Christ in the Christian, it is the fruit if the tree of life. We are His garden – this is the fruit that grows in us (Jn. 15:1). We cannot bear fruit on our own – we must abide in Him. We cannot develop Godly character without the Holy Spirit working in our lives.

The gifts of the Spirit equip one with abilities for service in the Kingdom of God; the fruit of the Spirit reveals who one is in the Kingdom of God. Fuchsia Pickett, "Presenting the Holy Spirit" p. 147.

…and this from Croft M. Pentz: The fruit of the Holy Spirit can be expressed as three groups of three. The first fruit in each of these groups is the key to the other two:

v Inward Fruit that are experienced in our own hearts:

Love
Joy—Love delighting
Peace—Love resting

v Outward Fruit that are revealed to others:

Patience
Kindness—calm and compassionate expression of patience
Goodness—active expression of patience

v Upward fruit that are an expression of our relationship with God

Faith
Gentleness/meekness - gentle faith towards God
Self Control - Faith from God to live in holiness

7 Things - The Mercies of The Lord

Lamentations 3:22-23 describes the Father's acute yearning for a wayward people:

Through the Lord's mercies we are not consumed, Because His compassions fail not. They are new every morning; Great is Your faithfulness.

God's mercy incorporates His covenant of compassion, expressed in His consuming commitment to bring us into relationship with Himself.

His mercy is His compassion toward us even when we deserve punishment, His commitment to restore us even though we deserve to endure the consequences of our sin, and His covenant of love expressed at the point of our greatest foolishness.

The Mercies of the Lord based mostly out of Psalm 103. Here are the characteristics of His mercies:

1. The quality of His Mercies: Tender. Verse 4 reads, Who redeems your life from destruction, Who crowns you with lovingkindness and tender mercies.

This word for “mercies” is racham, (Strongs # 7256) which also means “womb.” God’s mercy towards us comes from the deepest place where He “births” His love and compassion for us. Often, when this Hebrew word is used for mercy it is preceded by the description “tender” mercies.

2. The origin of His mercies: The Lord. Verse 8, The Lord is merciful
This verse uses the 2nd Hebrew word for mercy: checed (Strong’s #2617 - Used 248 times). This word indicates God’s acts of favor, kindness and tenderness towards us.

God’s mercy is not simply a feeling towards us – His full rescuing power is at the core of His mercy. Here are all the hurting ones in Psalm 103 who benefit from His mercy:

V3–those with iniquities
V3–those with diseases
V4–those who are on a path towards destruction
V5–those who are old and weak
V6–those who are oppressed
V 10–those who are sinners
V 13–those who are fatherless (see also: Hosea 14:3)

3. The measure of His mercies: Plenteous/Abounding. Verse 8, The Lord is merciful and gracious, slow to anger, and abounding in mercy.

4. The extent of His Mercies: Great – as high as the heavens are above the earth Verse 11, For as the heavens are high above the earth, So great is His mercy toward those who fear Him

5) The duration of His Mercies: everlasting Verse 17, "But the mercy of the Lord is from everlasting to everlasting on those who fear Him and His righteousness to children's children."

6. The recipients of His Mercies: …those who fear Him Verse 11, …His mercy toward those that fear Him.

7. The result of His mercies of His Mercies: We wear mercy as a crown verse 4 …who crowns you with lovingkindness and tender mercies

Without His wonderful tender mercy where would we be? Knowing who I am to the core, and my many weaknesses as He does; His compelling, drawing covenant love continues to shower me with mercy – even when I fail. What extraordinary love.

...hope in the Lord;
For with the Lord there is mercy,
And with Him is abundant redemption.
Psalm 130:7

The Lord takes pleasure in those...who hope in His mercy.
Psalm 147:11
