Now
for the fourth ingredient in the holy anointing oil:
500
shekels of cassia—this evergreen plant only grows at very high elevations. It has golden flowers, which speak of glory—Christ’s holy, glorious nature.
Cassia comes from the Hebrew word, “kadad” or " etzi'ot" (Ps. 45:8) which
means to bow the head, to stoop and to strip off, and to quit something.
The root word,
kiddah, in both Hebrew and Arabic, signifies a strip and refers to the
strips of bark from which the spice is made. In the spiritual sense, cassia speaks
of humility, being stripped of pride, set apart (holy) with a servant's heart.
The overcomer’s life who has stripped of sin and walks in victory—the grace to
quit the things that keep us from holiness.
There is an anointing that can only come upon
our lives as we scrape off and quit the things that are contrary to the royal
Christ-nature we must embrace.
Cassia is clearly a picture of humility. It portrays how Jesus
sacrificially laid down His own life. He was willing to empty Himself out and
to be stripped of His deity. He humbled Himself by becoming obedient to the
point death (Phil. 2:3-8) and was crushed for us.
According
to the scientists, cassia oil is the most antiseptic of essential oils and is
considered a tonic and stimulant. It effectively treats nausea. There is a true
saying that humility combats pride. Pride is indeed nauseating to the wise. Humility and stripping off the old, sinful man is the greatest of all cleansing agents, and the greatest inspiration for holiness.
Andrew Murray wrote: Pride must die in you, or nothing of heaven can live in
you.
This fragrance reminds us to honor others and
follow the example of the Servant of all. We also should become willing to be stripped of
everything that offends God and become like Him in this godly virtue of
humility.
It’s the humble who enjoy the promises of being led in justice, and being
taught His way Ps 25:9 He leads the
humble in justice, and He teaches the humble His way.
