Jesus is portrayed in type by so
many Bible characters. He is our High Priest like Melchizedek, the Great King
like David, the Son like Joseph etc. Here we see that Job had several
characteristics like Jesus:
Jesus and Job
• Both lost everything, friends and
position, in virtually one day.
Jesus: Ps. 41:9 Even
my own familiar friend in whom I trusted, who ate my bread, Has lifted up his
heel against me.
Job: 1:21 And he said: "Naked I came from my mother's womb, And naked shall I
return there. The Lord gave, and the Lord has taken away; Blessed be the name
of the Lord."
• Both had to endure great mental
and physical pain, including open wounds or sores.
Jesus: Is. 53:4-5 Surely He has borne
our griefs and carried our sorrows; Yet we esteemed Him stricken, Smitten by
God, and afflicted.
But He was wounded for our
transgressions, He was bruised for our iniquities; The chastisement for our
peace was upon Him, And by His stripes we are healed.
Job: Job 2:7 So Satan went out from the presence of the Lord, and struck Job with
painful boils from the sole of his foot to the crown of his head.
• Both lived perfect, upright, God-fearing
lives:
Jesus: Heb. 4:15 For
we do not have a High Priest who cannot sympathize with our weaknesses, but was
in all points tempted as we are, yet without sin.
Job: Job 1:1 There was a man in the land of Uz, whose name was Job;
and that man was blameless and upright, and one who feared God and shunned
evil.
Job 1:8 There is no one on earth like him; he is blameless and upright, a man
who fears God and shuns evil
• Both cried out that they had been
forsaken by God
Jesus: Matt. 27:46 …Jesus cried out with a loud voice, saying, "Eli,
Eli, lama sabachthani?" that is, "My God, My God, why have You forsaken Me?"
Job: Job
30:21-22 I cry out to You, but
You do not answer me; I stand up, and You regard me.
But You have become
cruel to me; With the strength of Your hand You oppose me.
• Both questioned the unfairness of
their predicament - but in different ways
Jesus: Lu. 22:42 saying, "Father, if it is Your will, take this cup away from Me;
nevertheless not My will, but Yours, be done."
Job: Job 30:21-22 "I
cry out to You, but You do not answer me; I stand up, and You regard me.
But You have become cruel to me;
With the strength of Your hand You oppose me.
• Both were absolutely sure of their
purity from any transgression.
Jesus: John 8:12 When Jesus spoke again to the
people, he said, "I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will never walk
in darkness, but will have the light of life."
Job: See Job 31
• Both in the end "were
raised" to much greater things.
Jesus: Lu. 9:22 saying, "The Son of Man must suffer many things, and be rejected by
the elders and chief priests and scribes, and be killed, and be raised the third day."
Job: Job 42:12 Now the Lord blessed the latter days of Job more than his beginning
