G. K. Chesterton and Michael Hoppe

Here is a beautiful piece of music by a composer I really love: Michael Hoppe - born in the UK but now living in the USA. This piece is from his 1997 album The Poet: Romance for Cello,  with Martin Tillman.

Gold Leaves (For G. K. Chesterton)

This piece was featured on a Sopranos episode

As far as I can tell, the music was inspired by a poem by G. K. Chesterton (1874 - 1936) the wonderful and brilliant Christian apologist. Born in England, Chesterton wrote extensively on philosophy, politics and religion. He wrote 80 books, several hundred poems, short stories, essays and plays.
Hoppe's music was inspired by the following poem:

Lo! I am come to autumn,
When all the leaves are gold
Grey hairs and golden leaves cry out
The year and I are old.

In youth I sought the prince of men,
Captain in cosmic wars,
Out Titan, even the weeds would show
Defiant to the start.

But now a great thing in the street
Seems any human nod,
Where shifts in strange democracy
The million masks of God.

In youth I sought the golden flower
Hidden in wood or wold,
But I am come to autumn,
When all the leaves are gold.

There are whole web sites dedicated to quotes by Chesterton I simply wanted you to hear this beautiful music and contemplate the beauty of God's face - "the million masks of God."

Enjoy!
